You have big problems and you know it. And now, you’ve allowed your party to be hijacked by a person who will only make matters worse for you.
I write this as a very concerned citizen of the United States. I am not a political person and, in fact, not very politically savvy. I am an Independent who believes in a two-party system and have been watching one party, the Republican Party, implode. You need to take action quickly before you totally fall apart and become irrelevant.
My hope is that some people in the Republican Party will read this and it will influence the decisions you make in the upcoming convention. Please don’t let yourselves get hijacked!
The first step in any recovery program is to admit you have a problem and you are no longer in control and you need help. I am an outsider, but sometimes it takes someone with a whole new perspective to shed light on what is happening and create the spark for action.
I believe you need to take responsibility for the void you created that allowed one person to hijack your Party. You created a fractionalized Republican Party that could not gain general consensus on your core values. You allowed the “Tea Party” to pull you to one extreme and then couldn’t figure out how to manage to one party voice. So, you just stumbled along and became a party of obstructionists.
You lost your ability to play the role we need in governing with a two-party system. We need heated debates about issues, but we also need negotiated solutions. What we now have is a system of “lines in the sand.” If you don’t like what is offered you just say you won’t play. You are not doing your jobs on behalf of the citizens you represent. You represent all of us, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents.
We have a very diverse Country, which is what makes us great. We all can’t always get what we personally want, but we would like to believe we have representation for all of us that will work hard to negotiate the best possible solutions on behalf of the majority.
In the past we had politicians who negotiated hard and sometimes fiercely over important issues. It’s never been easy, especially in a Democracy. But that’s your job. You’ve taken the chicken’s way out by just not showing up. It’s easy to just say no, we don’t like it so we won’t play.
Damn it, start governing and work for the values that make this Country so great. Yes, you created the mess you and we are in. You allowed a person to hijack your party who doesn’t subscribe to the core values of our country.
You’ve struck a Faustian bargain and sold your soul to the devil. You are putting the perceived good of the Party over the good of our Nation.
“Make this country great again” is a ridiculous slogan since we are great, at least compared to the rest of the world. The “Leave it to Beaver”, Ward and June Cleaver days are over and we should not go back to them. Yes, we have a lot of work to do, but going backwards isn’t the way to do it; we need to move forward. We are great, we just need to get on track again.
Take a look in the mirror at how your party has tried to govern over the past eight years and especially look at the person you are endorsing as your leader. Going backwards is not the answer. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.”
Start playing your role again in our two-party system, but do it in a way that has open debates and work for resolutions that work on behalf of the country, not just some of your outspoken constituents. Please start GOVERNING again!
As you prepare for the Republican National Convention, think about the first step in your recovery program and admit you have a problem that you can’t control and get help. Don’t keep drinking the Kool-Aid. Throw the bottle away before it kills you.
