Our government finally allowed it to happen… We’ve become a land of consternation
I know my hypothesis can never be proven true with analysis, but I believe it will highlight an issue that is tearing apart our country. I’ve written about this a number of different ways in the past. But now, our country has fallen into a state of consternation and I am fearful that we don’t see it or just want to ignore it.
Maybe Donald Trump will be seen historically as the catalyst for showing the true colors of our government (Republicans and Democrats). Maybe this would have happened even if he didn’t come along. The point is, our government hasn’t been doing its job for many years and has now left us exposed to anarchy. Lines in the sand, ignoring the average American’s needs, greed, money, pandering to the lobbyists like the NRA, drug and health insurance companies, etc. have left us exposed.
At this point the historical details are not really that important- the question is, will our government take the bold steps it needs to take and start leading and governing?
As WWII erupted we had leadership that stepped up to the task; however, they had ignored early signs for many years before. Hitler had taken control and was rounding up Jews and others marching them off to concentration camps.
The fact that one party of our government totally collapsed and allowed themselves to be hijacked by a shyster says a lot. The leader of the Republican Party, Paul Ryan, seemed like a reasonable leader when he took over as Speaker of the House, when nobody else wanted the job; however, he has now succumbed to the P.T. Barnum of our time for the sake of his party, not the country or its people.
Now, people across the country feel embolden to use their guns and suppressed anger to act out in horrific ways. We are fighting a global war on terror, but also fighting the beginnings of an internal war. Great Britain decided to leave the E.U. for similar reasons: Many of their citizens were also feeling ignored and needed to see a big change.
I’m sure most people can’t see the similarity to pre-Nazi Germany and the ultimate slaughter of millions of Jews; however, it’s right here if you open up your eyes. Just as a reminder, the Republican Party presidential nominee allegedly had a copy of Adolf Hitler’s collected speeches, “My New Order” in a cabinet beside his bed. Just one more scary possibility about the bully in the room.
What can be done? First, Paul Ryan and the Republican Party should have rejected Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention this week. While it may appear, on the surface, as overriding the will of the people, it would have said we need our leadership to say we will not accept a snake oil salesman for the candidate of our party.
Second, the Democrats need to step up to take a strong position on the need for major social change in the country and build it into their platform. The presumptive Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, needs to make a major speech addressing what is going on in a strong, direct, and specific way.
And third, our President Obama needs to demonstrate leadership in a forceful way and not pander to anyone, especially the NRA. Bobby Kennedy took on the mob, so why not the NRA?
There are many more things that should and can be done, but we need action now. The rest of the world is watching.
Don’t think that Russia, Iran, China, North Korea and all of the terrorist groups aren’t salivating at our internal troubles.
We appear to be crumbling from within with a lack of strong leadership. We are ripe for something even worse than Donald Trump. I say to all of us frogs in the proverbial pot of water… the water temperature is getting very hot and very quickly.
