Gone are the days of, “He without sin among you, cast the first stone…”
Hypocrisy is the new moral imperative in the land.
Say one thing… and do the opposite.
Ever Since Donald Trump was elected President, we have seen a growing number of people show how hypocritical they are. Individuals and groups are now showing their true colors. We are seeing this play out play out daily when Republicans, Evangelicals, and many individuals rationalize their support for Trump: He is getting them what they want, and who really cares how he does it. However, the long-term consequences of this hypocrisy are more dramatic than anyone seems to understand.
Great, you have a new Supreme Court Justice who meets your conservative views, along with many Republican Federal Judge appointments. You have a tax bill that favors the wealthy. You have deregulation on businesses. You have what seems to be tighter control on immigration.
The problem is, the leadership that is creating the chaos that allows these things to get done is destroying any moral fabric our society has had. It’s also destroying our republic.
Everyone knows that Trump lies.
We have thousands of examples that factually prove that he lies. We know that Trump publicly bullies anyone who gets in his way. Trump constantly criticizes our legal system and discredits the press calling anything he doesn’t like, “fake news.” Trust is not part of his DNA. He will agree to something one minute and go back on his promise the next. He shows absolutely zero empathy for others; probably because he doesn’t have a clue what empathy is since he only cares about one person- Himself. And, on top of all of this, he is an alleged racist and misogynist.
It’s no secret. We all know what he is like.
The world knows what he is like.
The problem is that so many people are willing to look the other way or give him a “Mulligan” (A second free shot in golf terms) as one Evangelical said. Yes, these people may be getting the results they want, but they don’t seem to care how those results are produced and they are oblivious to the long-term consequences of his behaviors.
Hypocrites don’t care about the consequences of their behaviors.
There is no accountability in the hypocrite’s moral standard. It doesn’t matter what they do, because they think people with give them a “pass”.
Don’t you think that there are many young impressionable teenagers and even younger children around the world who are watching this play out? Trump’s behaviors are now condoned, if not explicitly, then implicitly. So what will these young people think? It’s okay for me to behave this way as long as I get the results I want. And, if I get caught, I’ll just take a “Mulligan.”
What does this do to a society’s moral fabric?
It’s already taking a toll. We don’t know what “fake news” vs. factual news is. We can’t trust our government and are now skeptical of law enforcement and our legal system. Bullying is acceptable.
Just look at the behaviors of the man who is our President and who is supposed to be our leader, our role model. Yes, you may be getting the results you want, but it’s time to look at how these behaviors will affect generations to come. Do we want to live in a society where people behave like Donald Trump?
The only way to tell these impressionable young people that we don’t condone his behavior is to take a stand and say this is not the society we have been and definitely not the society we want to become.
